As part of a major re-branding initiative, Stevens Institute of Technology launched a poll on their Facebook fan page on March 2 at 9 a.m. to decide on the school's new logo. The poll was directed at all members of the Stevens community, including students, alumni, faculty and administration, and originally featured four black-and-white finalist logos designed by an outside graphics firm, Spiral Design Studio.

A recent episode of "National Geographic" called "Preventing Armageddon" addressed the fear of annihilation of all life on planet Earth by any number of different events. The most recent of these events happened 65 million years ago when an asteroid hit Earth, sending up clouds of dust that in turn blocked out the sun, killing many different animal species including the dinosaurs.

There is a bittersweet feeling that comes from knowing that a chapter of your life is ending. A part of me is heartbroken to be leaving this new family so soon while another part of me is excited for life after Stevens. It has been quite a ride, and I want to thank those that traveled it with me and those who made it memorable.

Balloons, cameras and candy at Pierce? What are we celebrating again? Oh right, we're voting for a new logo. I still don't think I'm quite sure what the old logo was. I'm by no means any sort of graphic designer, nor do I wish to offend anyone, but surely with a school full of such talented people we could come up with choices a little more creative and interesting than the four currently presented.

One of the attractive features that lured many of the students in my graduating class (myself included) to Stevens was the guarantee of housing all four years. In the most densely populated area in the country, this would seem like a pretty sweet deal. For a while, it was a sweet deal.

In its marketing overhaul, Stevens has made yet another great leap forward for the school: the new Stevens Logo. Through a Facebook group, Stevens leads us to the poll for the new logo, laying out the four choices for us. Beforehand, they take us through a bit of an explanation as to how they got this far.

I understand that not every student has the benefit of sampling the psychology classes here at Stevens. For that, you have my deepest sympathies, but allow me to teach a small but important theory proposed by Abraham Maslow. Maslow proposed that the difference between wildly successful or exemplary people and those who do not rise in society could be explained by an individual's ability to satisfy their "hierarchy of needs.

Last week I wrote about the example set by Muhammad Ali as an advocate of individual rights. One of Muhammad Ali's major influences was Malcolm X, the great spokesman for the Nation of Islam and an advocate of individual freedom. His powerful oratory encouraged Black Muslims to be responsible for themselves and their own communities and also encouraged them to stand up for themselves in the face of aggression.

Readers, the jig is up! After a year of reviews, I have finally been called out for the pattern in my rating system. For faithful followers of mine, you have probably noticed that I have never really given a review less than a 3 or a perfect 5. The reason I have never given 5 is because I feel that it would imply that it was the greatest dining experience of my lifetime, and that I wouldn't have changed a thing.

This week Stevens was bought out by Facebook. Or at least that's how it seemed from the look of campus and Pierce. For those students who are hibernating this winter and have somehow missed the large blue and white Facebook stickers scattered around campus, Stevens has decided that the old "brick" logo no longer completely describes the Stevens community and instead wants to undergo a "rebranding" with a choice of four new logos.
